Legends in Grambling was the setting when friends and family from near and far gathered for an evening of elegance and nostalgia to celebrate the 60th birthday of Monroe businessman and community servant Alton R. Brooks.

The surprise birthday soirée was hosted by his daughters, Adrienne Brooks Ogbevire and Amie R. Brooks of Houston and Ashley R. Brooks of Atlanta.

The guest of honor was overwhelmed with cheers and applause as he entered the party walking down a red carpet. Family members gave testimonials as to Alton being the glue that holds the family together. His brother Danny Brooks read a special poem.

Alton's daughters presented him with a portrait of himself at age 33 by Sandra Jackson Codrescu, a Monroe native who now resides in Austin. The evening concluded with a champagne toast, a prayer and plenty of dancing.

Alton has owned and operated A.R. Brooks Paint Contracting for more than 30 years. He also serves the residents in his community by initiating street cleaning and cooking Sunday dinner each week for his elderly neighbors.
