Homebirth advocate dies in hospital after giving birth

An Australian woman and homebirth advocate named Caroline Lovell died on January 24th, a day after she was rushed to the hospital after her daughter’s birth at home. At some point during the birth of her second child (and second homebirth),台湾综艺
Lovell went in cardiac arrest. What a sad, tragic end to a young mother’s life. She was thirty-six years old.

I really hate to hear stories like this one. First and foremost, I feel for the family, for the baby who doesn’t have a mother to hold her or a breast to suckle. But what also greatly chaps my hide is the fact that those who are against homebirth–the ones who feel like a woman is being reckless and irresponsible because she chooses to give birth outside of a medical facility–they just take the ball and run with it. The homebirth movement has had a 29 percent increase and attitudes are shifting. But after a tragedy like this, homebirth critics will unfairly use the situation to prove their argument that every birth is a second away from disaster.

It’s true, birth is a traumatic event. Traumatic in that it is life-changing, bloody, raw and serious. I mean, whenever life is being brought into this world, it’s a serious event. But one thing is for sure–it’s natural. Birth is a natural, normal event and women’s bodies are equipped to handle it. It’s not a disaster every time a woman’s cervix is dilated to ten centimeters.

I hear so many comments such as this one.

Does anyone ever stop and think that many, many of the reasons why birth changes from a normal event to a life or death situation is because complications are instigated by “routine medical procedures”? Yes, there are true emergencies and yes, things happen. But they are still rare, regardless of where a woman chooses to give birth.

Please note that it is still unclear as to exactly how Caroline Lovell died. Clearly, she did not die while giving birth at home. It was not until 黑亮综艺
the next day and after she sought emergency medical care and so far, no reports have come out stating the exact reason for her death.
